Have you got any plans for the weekend?

I'm taking my little sister to the cinema on Friday evening.

Really? What are you going to see?

Oh, it's a film for kids. I promised to take her.

Are you doing anything on Saturday morning? I'm going shopping with my cousin. Would you like to join us?

Oh, I'm sorry, I can't. My grandfather is coming round to see us.

Oh. That's a shame. Yeah, another time.

Hi and welcome to Musical Talent Now! My name's Jane Brown and today I'm talking to Charlie from Seattle. Charlie, tell us about your music.

Hi Jane. I love music! I started playing the piano when I was 5 years old.

Now, I write songs, sing, and play the piano in a band.

How wonderful! What kind of music do you write?

Well, I write pop music, and I like playing rock, too.

Have you played at any concerts?

Yes, I have. The band and I went to about ten schools in Seattle. It was a lot of fun, but very hard work.

Have you made a CD yet?

Yes, I have. I made one last year. It's called Someone Like You, and I've already sold 5000 CDs.

Wow. How old are you? I'm 15. That's great!

I grew up in a large family. I have four brothers and sisters.

When I was young, my mother spent an hour every morning preparing lunches for all of us to take to school.

My lunch was almost the same every day: an egg sandwich, some chips, a banana and a cookie.

The problem was that I never liked eggs. I used to throw the sandwich.

Then I would have trouble listening carefully in class because I was hungry.

I never told my mother about this because I didn't want to make more work for her.

But one day, when I was about ten, I had an idea.

That evening I told my mother, "You know, I don't really like eggs. Can I make my own sandwich from now on?"

My mother answered, "Of course. You can make your own sandwich and you can also help me make all the other sandwiches."

From this experience I learned that if you really want something, it's OK to ask for it.

But if you volunteer to do something, you should also be prepared to do more work than you expected!
