  Text 1

M: What are all those paintings on that wall over there? They look like they were done by a child.

W: Actually, I paid about two thousand dollars for each of the small ones. And the larger one was three times as much!

  Text 2

M: Excuse me. Where would I find vitamins for dogs?

W: We have some on aisle five. If you need a wider selection, however, I would suggest going to a pet store.

  Text 3

M: OK, why don’t you try putting your leg out a little bit more?

W: All right… Ouch! Mark, I think we need to stop for a minute.

M: What are you talking about? These pictures are looking great! We can’t stop now!

  W: I think I pulled a muscle during that last pose…

  Text 4

W: Didn’t you have an interview with an advertising company yesterday? How did it go?

M: They called to reschedule it for next Monday.

W: Well, that’s the day after tomorrow.

  Text 5

M: We’re scheduled to be at your place later this afternoon.

W: I’m afraid we have to push it back a couple of hours. My mother’s flight was delayed, so I won’t be back from the airport until about 3:00 p.m.

  Text 6

W: Oh, it’s super crowded here.

M: Yes. People like to eat in cafeterias. They’re cheap and quick.

W: What shall we do now? I’m a bit lost in here.

M: Just pick up a plate and put a knife, fork, spoon, and a paper napkin on it. Then, just start walking down the line.

W: I see. Are those the food prices that are posted on the wall?

M: Yeah. You can choose whatever you want.

W: What a variety of foods! Barbecued chicken, fried fish, spaghetti…they all sound delicious.

M: They sure do. What are you going to have?

W: I’d like that fried fish.

M: OK. That’s also my favorite.

  Text 7

M: Hey, did you have fun at the company party on Friday night?

W: Yeah, I guess it was OK. Those parties usually end up the same way.

  M: What do you mean?

W: Oh, you know…someone ends up drinking too much, things like that.

M: Really? This was my first office party. And I didn’t notice any of that stuff going on at all.

W: Yeah, you know what? You’re totally right. This year’s party was different. Everything was totally relaxed. It was actually fun to be around our coworkers for a change!

M: Did you see the dress that Maggie was wearing?

W: Which Maggie? The one from the accounting department or Mr. Bradley’s secretary?

  M: The secretary.

W: Oh, yeah. I liked it a lot. It was really pretty. And blue is my favorite color.

M: Mine, too. I just think it’s cool to see people dressed up differently from boring old black and white business clothes.

  Text 8

W: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?

M: This is Roger Bell in Room 908. Listen, I need to change rooms. It’s too noisy in here. My wife was woken up several times by the elevator. She said she couldn’t stand it.

W: I’m very sorry, sir. I do apologize. Room 908 is one of our older rooms. It’s possible that noise can be heard early in the morning when everything else is quiet.

M: Well, look here. Since we’re paying good money to stay in this hotel, I’d like to change rooms, please.

W: I’d be happy to, sir. The problem is that we’re all booked up today. Could you wait till tomorrow? There’ll be some rooms for you to choose from then.

M: All right, but I think you should offer us a suite tomorrow evening so we can finally get a good night’s sleep. That would be fair.

W: No problem, sir. I’ll be sure to make a note of that. Everything will be taken care of. And if there is anything else you need, please let us know.

  Text 9

W: Oh, Peter, there you are. You’ve been gone for ages. What kept you so long?

M: I’m sorry I’m so late, Sally. You know I went to the bank to cash some traveler’s checks? Well, the computer system was down. Just my luck, right? They said the problem would be fixed in a few minutes, so I waited. And then I started talking to another guy in the bank, and I forgot all about the time.

W: Oh, really? Who did you meet in the bank? Someone who works there?

M: No, he’s a tourist from New York. His name’s Henry, and he’s been here for a week, but he’s going to Germany tomorrow. He’s an architect, and he’s spending four weeks traveling around Europe.

  W: Just like us!

M: Yeah, you said it! He told me the names of some places where we should eat. Great food, and not too pricey, he said. Oh, and he also gave me this map of the bus system. He said he didn’t need it anymore.

W: That’s cool, but it’s too bad he’s leaving tomorrow. Ah, here’s the waitress. Let’s order. Do you want anything to eat, or should we just have a drink?

M: Well, I’m hungry, and we’ve got a lot of sightseeing to do, so let’s just have a snack and a drink.
